Course Information
Description Development of the philosophy and practice of social work in the United States, survey of the fields and techniques of social work.
Prerequisites None
Learning Outcomes 1. Students will acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the nature of generalist social work practice.
2. Students will be able to identify the areas of knowledge and basic skills required for entry-level practice.
3. Students will be able to identify the core values of the profession and social work’s historical and contemporary commitment to populations at risk and to those who experience social and economic oppression.
4. Students will be able to identify the roles, levels of intervention, and the fields of practice including a basic knowledge of the systems ecological perspective and the empowerment/strengths perspectives1.
.
Core Objectives This course provides an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for generalist social work in contemporary society. Social welfare services, policies, and their historical origins will be presented along with the unique experiences of diverse and at-risk populations affected by various social problems. This course provides an overview of the range of public and private social services available for meeting these problems. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to identify social work roles, values, and ethics, as well as the role of advocacy in the social work profession.

and electronic communication.
2. Students will apply and communicate understanding of the importance of diversity and difference in shaping life experiences in practice at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.
3. Students will apply self-awareness and self-regulation to manage the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse clients and constituencies
4. Students will apply their understanding of social, economic, and environmental justice to advocate for human rights at the individual and system levels.
5. Students will engage in practices that advance social, economic, and environmental justice.
